Today, at 37 weeks along in my pregnancy, I had my first formal meeting with my midwife to discuss having my baby at home. Although I’ve done this before, I was still nervous as to whether she would believe we had an adequate environment for the birth. How can my small home compete with the dedicated faciliaties of a hospital? To my relief, it is really very simple if you understand what everyone needs. So, what does a midwife need?

Recently my nephew celebrated his third birthday, and his parents allowed presents with the condition that they were not toys. A birthday toy ban might seem extreme but it is understandable. He already has a mountain of toys that either clutter the house, break or become lost and forgotten. When living in the city it’s easy not to know the people that live in your neighbourhood, street, or even apartment complex, and take for granted the benefits of building good relationships with neighbours. But moving to the countryside can be isolating, particularly after a transition from a busy area. Since moving here, we’ve learned not to take the connections we can forge with our neighbours for granted, and are already reaping the rewards.
